Beauty in the mist
In January 2012 this new Pedaliodes butterfly of the Nymphalidae family was found on an isolated paramo in the western cordillera of Colombia. Only very few expeditions looking for butterflies are know for this region. Pedaliodes constitute the most diverse group of butterflies that inhabit the cloud forest belt from Venezuela to Bolivia, extending from 1400m up to the boundary with open field paramo vegetation at around 3300 m above sea level. Most known species are restricted to the cloud forest and are associated with Bamboo plants, typical for the paramo vegetation. Each part of the Andean mountains that is isolated from its neighbours by deep valleys contains its own species composition of Pedaliodes, and seems to harbour the largest number of species at approximately 2500 m.
